What is travertine made of ?
Travertine is a sedimentary rock. It is a natural chemical precipitate of carbonate minerals; typically Aragonite, but often re-crystallized to or primarily Calcite. Its distinctive characteristic is the pores or holes that form a pattern across its face. The pores have been formed over time by escaping gases or very hot liquids venting from the interior of the earth to the surface.
Etch - blemish, white spots, dull spots.
Calcite reacts to acid based products such as wine, coke, perfume, pet stains, house hold cleaners, window cleaners. The chemical reaction is called etching, this is evident by wine ring marks, white spots, dull spots, blemishes on your travertine. These are not stains, the acid based product has eaten the surface of the marble.
